Where to start?

I found my way to belly dancing back in 2004. I had a mix of Hollywood film harem girls in my head when I began thinking of costuming and knew very little. It took 3 classes to fall in love, and I proceeded to spend a lot of money on costumes, ordering a skirt and veil in nearly every colour combination I could find. I spend hours pouring over the internet looking for what I wanted, and it wasn’t easy! I bought countless hip scarves, footwear, hair flowers and accessories I could find and soon enough my spare bedroom became an Aladdins Cave of Wonder! Sure, it impressed any fellow belly dance friends who came over to rehearse, but it was too much of everything.

As I am fortunate to have a lovely group of new students who are beginning their costuming journey, I thought I’d create this little page to help them, and any other belly dance student begin to navigate their way through the different stages of costuming, until they are ready to invest in a professional costume if that is what they are aiming for.

Until them… happy shimmies
